Samhain Tools

Samhain is an excellent time for kitchen witchery. The kitchen, hearth, and cauldron all convey deep symbolism of life, death, ancestry, and the powerful magic of ancient witch lore.

PROTECTION: Garlic, onion, and pepper braids are a protective folk craft. Add herbs or dried flowers to amplify the magical vibe.

When you cut garlic or onions, imagine they are repelling any unwanted energy.

SALT & PEPPER: Use salt to purify and cast a magical circle. Sprinkle salt over your shoulder or on doorsteps and windowsills for protection.

Peppercorns are also excellent for banishing. Mix salt and pepper with dark herbs of your choice. Use this mix as a blessing powder while you cook.

VINEGAR: Use dark balsamic for banishing and protection, apple cider vinegar for invigoration, and white vinegar to purify and cleanse.

KNIVES AND SHEARS: Cut and slice to release energy and looping thoughts. Chop with gusto and imagine any cords or pesky attachments falling away. Snip your shears wildly (and safely!) in the air while rotating counterclockwise as you shout, “Begone!”

HEARTH SPIRITS: Dedicate your kitchen altar to a deity or spirit. Ancestral spirits are often present in kitchen magic. Brigid, Cerridwen, the Cailleach, and Hestia & Vesta are well-known hearth deities, however there are many others.

THE MAGIC SPOON: A spoon (or broom) can be used as a kitchen witch’s wand to direct power. Stir things clockwise as you visualize what you desire. Stir counterclockwise to release and let go.

The Season of the Witch is an amazing book dedicated to helping you create the perfect Samhain celebration.
